Five Days, Five Nights (Cinco Dias, Cinco Noites), by José Fonseca e Costa (1996). With Paulo Pires, Vítor Norte, Sinde Filipe.
Portugal, 1949. The country is deeply under Salazar's dictatorship. The police is looking for a 19-year-old political fugitive, due to his alleged involvement in a revolutionary movement. In exchange for a heafty sum of money, a resourceful but mysterious older man agrees to help the youth negotiate his way to the Spanish border, the first stage of a long way to freedom. With everything to lose, including the money he carries with him, the youth has no choice but to follow the older man, whom he does not trust. As the difficult trek into the border continues, trepidation mounts.
The film is based on the true and autobiographic story of the escape from Portugal of the man who would become the historical leader of the Portuguese Communist Party, Álvaro Cunhal, who would remain exiled until 25 April 1974.
