The Embassy of Portugal and the Cinematheques introduce the 10th edition of PORTUGAL Film Week, to open in Tel Aviv on the 7th of September (Jerusalem - 8/9, Haifa – 9/9).

Dedicated to Lisbon, PORTUGAL Film Week # 10 focus on films that were shot in the Portuguese capital – recently considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world and holder of several important awards in the international tourism industry – and have the city not only as background but as an integral part of the script.  

  • ”The Misteries of Lisbon  or What the Tourist Should See” (2009), by José Fonseca e Costa, a documentary based on a book by Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa
  • “Night Train to Lisbon” (2013), by Bille August
  • “Under My Skin” (2011), by Vicente Alves do Ó 
  • “Beauty and the Paparazzo” (2010), by António-Pedro Vasconcelos
  • “The Mistery of the Sintra Road” (2007), by Jorge Paixão da Costa
  • “Alice” (2005), by Marco Martins
With the exception of ”The Misteries of Lisbon  or What the Tourist Should See”, which is spoken in English, PORTUGAL Film Week #10 presents films in their original versions in Portuguese (with occasional dialogues in other languages), with subtitles in Hebrew. Some of the films also have subtitles in English.

PORTUGAL Film Week # 10 is sponsored by the Portuguese Cultural Institute and the Portuguese Film Institute. The event has the sponsorship of the Lisbon Tourism Board, “Turismo de Lisboa”.

Synopsis
In 1925 Fernando Pessoa wrote a tourist guide for the Lisbon visitors of those days and named it “What the Tourist Should See”. The book was discovered in 1988. It was written in English, dated and signed by his own name. This film is a tribute to Lisbon and to Fernando Pessoa. This portrait of Lisbon, his home town, has been built not only with excerpts of the guide he wrote but also with chosen poems by one of his heteronyms: Álvaro de Campos.

Synopsis
On a day like many others, a woman leaves work. She’s late for a party, in the outskirts of Lisbon. As she drives on the highway she sees a man ready to jump off a bridge. She stops the car, gets off and approaches the man, trying to save him. Something unites the two. They kiss. But when she opens her eyes she no longer sees him. In a city full of mysteries, the woman tries to figure out who that man was, living an adventure beyond her imagination…  This woman had it all: the perfect husband, perfect friends and a perfect house. But in a snapshot everything changes. Sometimes, having it all is not enough…

Synopsis
Mariana, a popular soap opera actress is close to a nervous breakdown. Nothing seems to be working in her life. There are constant problems in the production of the telenovela she stars in, her popularity is far from what it used to be, and every single step she makes in Lisbon is graphically reported in the tabloids and in the “pink” magazines. A famous paparazzo seems to be the main responsible for Mariana’s lack of privacy. The actress is unable to detect the presence of the paparazzo around her but somehow she manages to pursue her and to take photographs of her everywhere she goes. One day Mariana meets a man who extricates her from a rather messy situation. They develop a romantic relationship during which he does everything he can to prevent her from finding out his “true” identity…

Synopsis
Lisbon, late 19th Century. A diplomatic crisis that unfolds between Portugal and the United Kingdom feeds deep anti-British feelings among the Portuguese. A feuilleton entitled “The Mystery of the Sintra Road” is published in weekly instalments in a popular newspaper. Letters to the editor of the “Diário de Notícias” newspaper feed the plot. Two prominent Portuguese writers, Eça de Queiroz and Ramalho Ortigão, are the authors of the series, which becomes a great success. Many believe that the series, involving a Portuguese Countess and a British officer is based on true events and personalities of Lisbon’s society.

193 days have passed since little Alice was last seen. Everyday her father leaves his house and repeats the same route he made the day the child went missing. His obsession in finding his daughter leads him to install a series of video cameras that record the movement in the streets of Lisbon. In the middle of all those faces, of that anonymous crowd, Alice's father searches for a lead, some help, one signal… The brutal pain caused by Alice’s absence has changed her father into a different person, but this tragic search may be the only way he can keep on believing that his daughter will eventually be found.
